Why Brand Attributes are Important for Your Business
If your business was a person, would you be friends with them?
Your business is like a person, and your brand is its personality.
As a business owner, you want your brand to be consistent, inspiring, and trustworthy. But how do you convey that? By choosing specific attributes or “personality traits” that help to define exactly who you are and what your business stands for.
Let’s break down brand attributes and why they are important for your business!
What is an Attribute?
An attribute is a characteristic or trait that defines someone or something. For example, if you’ve watched the Harry Potter films or read the books, you know that each house has certain words or attributes that describe them.
Gryffindor is courageous, Ravenclaw intelligent, Hufflepuff is kind, and Slytherin is cunning or sly.
To put that into a brand’s perspective, think of some of the most popular brands on the market.
Nike – slogan: Just do it.
Attributes: powerful, inspiring, inclusive, and strong.
You can pull those attributes out in every ad or piece of marketing they send out.
Apple – bold, innovative, imaginative, and advanced.
Apple creates immersive, simple, and clean advertising that showcases these attributes because they think outside the box and display themselves as unique.
If you go to a store, purchase an Apple product, or watch an ad – you can see these attributes shining through.
Why is it Important?
Attributes help to build consistency in your business and build brand awareness. If you’re constantly striving to portray those certain words in all your marketing, you will create a consistent, and strong business image.
You’ll also be able to create a sense of loyalty and ownership to your business by inviting your customers and clients to embrace those attributes.
When you create your brand and give it life through attributes, you build an entire universe for those who become a part of your business as consumers, clients, followers, or even team members.
Your brand and business become part of their lives, and that is how you build loyalty and trustworthiness.
Now that you have a better understanding of brand attributes, take a look at your business and see if you can pick them out right now.
If you can’t think of any or are unsure, don’t worry; we’ve got you covered in the next paragraph!
Defining Your Brand
When you started your business, you most likely created a vision and mission statement that helped you shape it.
As you were envisioning your business, did you also think about how you wanted people to perceive you? For example, did you want to be helpful, kind, inspiring, or intelligent?
Whether you did or didn’t, take a minute now and jot down 3 words that you believe describe your brand.
Did you choose unique or different words that helped you stand out from the competition when you chose those words?
You can take some more time and review them and change them up as you see fit, but for now, take those words and look at your business strategy.
When you look at your marketing, advertising, website, or even social media pages, do those words jump out at you?
Build on Your Attributes
If the answer to the above question is no, look at all of those aspects and pick 3 words you currently see as viewers or customers.
If those words don’t match or seem like attributes you want to portray, it’s time to get creative!
Go back to your mission and vision statements and your whole idea for starting the business.
Take those 3 words and mold them into what you want your brand personality to be!
Think about what we said initially: If your business were a person, would you be friends with them? What are they like? Are they fun, witty, compelling, creative, actionable, problem-solving, or intelligent?
Whatever words you may choose to use, be sure you take them and convey them throughout your business and marketing strategies.
We don’t mean literally putting those words everywhere, but take their essence and meaning and portray them thoughtfully to help you represent your business.
